The Nazca lines are one of the great mysteries of the ancient world (crystalinks). They are located in the Nazca Desert in Peru between the cuties of Nazca and Palpa and are only visible by air (Crystalinks). Not only geometric shapes were drawn, but also animals like spiders, monkeys, fish, dogs and hummingbirds. The lines were discovered in the 1920’s when commercial airlines started to fly over the Peruvian Desert and passengers reported them. (Carroll). No one knows what the lines were used for because all those who knew the answers died out. (crystalinks). There are many theories on the purpose of these lines but the most supported one is that of Maria Reiche. Reiche devoted her life to the study of the Nazca Lines believes their purpose was “to be an astronomical calendar and a way of sending messages to the gods” (Corona). The Nazca desert isn’t sandy or dusty; it’s only covered with a dark red surface of rocks and soil when the earth underneath the red surface is very light colored. To create the lines the Nazca people had to do was scrape away the red surface leaving the light soil to show (Carroll). The lines have been very well preserved through out the years because of the deserts climate. It is very dry, no wind, and gets very little rain which ensures the lines won’t wash away (Carroll). But lately with the changing climate all over the world, has caused the desert to get more rain then usual. The lines can’t survive against heavy rains and archeologists are afraid the lines could disappear (Wikipedia/Nazca lines).
